I work on 2 or 3 of them at once, and put the one I'm working on down after a few minutes to rest the clay and let it cool. I've also kept an ice pack on my work surface on hot days, and set the clay on that. Also you have to get up and wash your hands in cool water every 20 minutes or so or the residue from the clay will build up and be sticky.
